the nature 7

Our “Nature 7” plan is incorporated into the design process of all of our projects from the outset and we work hard to increase biodiversity and include natural habitat areas in all of our projects. We are passionate about our developments having a positive impact and we scrutinize each development to see how we are able to benefit local flora and fauna.

  • One new home, per home

For every single home we build, we add a new home for the local fauna.

Each new dwelling will incorporate either a Bird Nesting Box, Bat Roost Box or Bee Brick.

Depending on the project, these will either be placed within the building walls themselves, private gardens or the communal / shared amenity space.

  • edible planting

Each development we build will include a variety of edible planting either in the private gardens on communal areas.

These include berry bushes and fruit trees for both residents and wildlife to enjoy.

  • green heating

Renewable energy options can be restricted by local planning rules and the size of the dwelling.

Where possible, we aim for smaller homes, such as apartments to have the provision to be run on 100% renewable energy with a mixture of solar panels and renewable energy supplied from the National Grid.

Larger dwellings, where renewable electricity alone is not sufficient, we will endeavor to add solar panels to the roof space where suitable to provide a proportion of electricity to the building.

  • Nature Positive Hard Landscaping

As standard, our developments include “Hedgehog Highways” in in the fencing and boundaries which are permeable to wildlife. This aids animals in their hunt for food, allows them to socialize easier and opens up more habitat opportunities.

On Brownfield sites, we aim to recycle and re-purpose existing features and construction materials to create new habitat where appropriate.

Where practical, we incorporate other features, such as green roofs on sheds and Bicycle Stores or “bug hotels” into the side of bin stores.

  • Wildlife Friendly Soft Landscaping

In both private and communal gardens we add soft landscaping features to allow wildlife to thrive in our developments, these can include:

Hibernaculums built into the landscaping for native reptiles and amphibians to live and hibernate.

Pollinator and Butterfly Friendly Planting to encourage and provide food for native insects.

Hedgerow areas incorporated into garden, communal or street areas providing natural habitats for many types of animal.

  • Water management

All our sites use a Sustainable Drainage System which manages stormwater to mimic natural drainage.

Retention Basins, Rain Gardens, Balancing Ponds and Permeable Surfaces are all used where appropriate to reduce the strain on stormwater drains and reduce the likelihood of flooding.

Selective tree planting is used where appropriate to naturally store rainwater to prevent immediate run off.

  • Conscious Design

Sometimes, it’s not about what you do, but what you don’t do. We don’t use plastic tree guards, herbicides or peat.

Landscaping maintenance plans for each development, as well as strategically using complimentary plant species, for example drought or flood resistant planting promote longevity of the site to reduce the environmental (and financial) cost of having to periodically re-landscape the garden areas.
